Traditional Mandana Design On Canvas

Mandana paintings are wall and floor paintings done in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, India. Mandana are drawn to protect home, welcome gods into homes, and as a mark of celebration on festive occasions. Learn the nuances of this beautiful artform in this workshop using Fevicryl range of products
STEP 1 : Source the base material
- Take plain canvas board measuring 12” x 16” in size.
- We are going to paint canvas with a traditional Mandana design, which are traditionally made on mud walls, to decorate the outer or the inner sides of the walls of houses.
- We have tried a similar design on a canvas by treating the canvas board.
STEP 2 : Make the mixture
- Take a plastic bowl, add POP and Fevicol MR with a little amount of water, mix it thoroughly to make a smooth batter consistency.
- Apply the POP mixture on the canvas with a painting knife, to create rough texture effect.
- Leave it to dry completely.
STEP 3 : Paint the base coat
- Paint the textured canvas giving a mud effect using Acrylic Colours Burnt Sienna 01, Indian Red 10 and little amount of White 27.
- Let it dry.
STEP 4 : Draw the design
- Take an A3 white paper, draw a Mandana design with an elephant motif and birds with a lot of patterns around.
STEP 5 : Trace the design
- Trace the same design on the textured canvas with white carbon paper.
- Start painting the design and the line patterns using Acrylic Colour - White 27.
- Let it dry completely.
